GKD: trade fair produces encouraging results

“It was one of the best ACHEMAs yet for GKD,” concludes Peter Wirtz, Business Unit Leader at GKD – Gebr. Kufferath AG, summing up this year’s trade fair appearance in Frankfurt. The world’s leading technical weaving mill was represented by three business units at the foremost international trade fair for the chemical industry and process technology that takes place every three years. Numerous innovative solutions for systems, equipment and components on the basis of new types of mesh designs were the focus of GKD’s presentation, delivering state-of-the-art answers to the main challenges faced by the process industry today. The high visitor frequency and quality of talks were an impressive affirmation of the chosen points of focus.

Self-cleaning belt filter
The self-cleaning belt filter system from the MAXFLOW filter range was met with the greatest interest. Thanks to a self-cleaning belt made of stainless steel mesh, the system is particularly user-friendly and cost-efficient. Because it works without less efficient filter fleece and without the addition of further filter aids, the high costs for consumables and their disposal that are otherwise commonplace, do not apply. It still boasts filtration performance comparable with current paper belt filters – advantages that decision-makers found particularly appealing.

Rescreenable vertical pressure leaf filters
Convenience and cost savings were also common themes of customer enquiries regarding rescreenable vertical pressure leaf filter elements. The NEVERLEAK technology developed by GKD and presented at the trade fair for the first time reduces overall costs by up to 40 percent thanks to the possibility of multiple rescreening to maintain the original quality. Automatic welding of the filter mesh to the solid frame structure guarantees a continuous, secure seal. Moreover, the welding seam on the outside of the frame makes leaks immediately visible both during manufacture and in operation. Simplified maintenance, precise fit, even building up of the filter cake and high mechanical strength also convinced prospective customers primarily from the chemical and vegetable oil industry. The screening service for vertical pressure leaf filters was also met with great interest.

Sought-after combination
In the field of process belt filters, the VACUBELT belt range for vacuum belt filters was the focus of customer enquiries, with the VACUBELT 2015 belt type used in the world’s largest coal-fired power stations for FGD gypsum dewatering being the subject of particular interest. A further highlight presented at the trade fair was the combination with the PAD seam – a flat, new seam that increases the filter’s durability. The first belts of this kind with the new seam design are already in use, for example in the new power station unit in Niederaußem and in Mellach, Austria. Meanwhile, in the field of process belt technology, there was also strong demand for VACUBELT filter belts of the type 3356, used for extracting phosphoric acid, and CONDUCTO dryer belts, whose process-dependent mesh design is ideal for drying renewable raw materials.

Cost-saving simulation
Given the increasing demands in terms of efficiency and process safety, the leading expertise of GKD as a developer and manufacturer of high-precision metallic mesh and complex technical filtration systems played a key role in discussions. With the integrated simulation environment WeaveGEO, GKD breaks new ground in this area too. Mesh geometries modelled individually for each customer through CFD simulation enable targeted improvement to or development of process-specific, optimal geometries. The high correlation of the values with real meshes results in significant time and cost savings. As such, the presentation by the responsible project engineer at GKD, Markus Knefel, within the scope of the framework programme to the trade fair met with a positive reception.
